一、in是表示在某一地區內的方位（屬於該範圍，在境內）。

例如：

China is in the east of Asia. 中國在亞洲東部。(中國是亞洲的一個國家，處於亞洲的範圍之內)

Guilin is in the north of Guangxi. 桂林在廣西北部。(桂林是廣西的一座城市)

二、on是表示與某一地區的毗鄰關係（兩地接壤）。

三，“next to...”屬於非相等比較句型，標準形式是“主語+謂語+next to+被比較物件”。“next to...”的意思是:緊鄰 在…近旁 僅次於 緊接也有“幾乎”的意思。

例句：

Next to skiing my favourite sport is skating.我最喜歡的運動除了滑雪就是溜冰。【表緊鄰在…近旁】

The horse came next to last (= the one before the last one) in the race.

這匹馬在比賽中跑了個倒數第二。【表幾乎】
